16 weeks is the first week of this semester, and overall I think it's not bad. Although there were some unsatisfactory arrangements, such as some small tasks not being completed according to the schedule, I completed one of the most important tasks of this semester in the first week - finding a suitable place to write my thesis.
Finding a Thesis Topic#
After communicating with Prof. George Chang last Tuesday after class, I was a bit disappointed because I found out that I couldn't do the direction I was most looking forward to under his supervision. I was very excited when I wrote him an email before, thinking that I could find a great teacher. However, the result of the communication with the teacher after class made me realize that it was not consistent with the direction I expected. So last week, I started searching on Google for laboratories in Germany that do research in the direction I want to pursue, and then I found the Robot Learning Lab at the University of Freiburg.
This lab is exactly what I want to do. The professor in the lab looks young and approachable, and in his description, he mentioned that he wants to do research on the intersection of multi-modal learning, computer vision, and robotics. Looking at his citations on Google Scholar, it's quite impressive, indicating that it is a vibrant lab. With great interest, I clicked on the page of every doctoral student and found that two of them have research interests that align with what I want to do, embodied AI. What surprised me even more is that this lab has open positions. All these factors make me very excited about applying to write my Master's thesis here. So, with a nervous heart, I wrote an email to the professor over the weekend to apply for writing my Master's thesis.
When I started writing, it was already Tuesday of the second week. I have received an email from a doctoral student, inviting me to discuss the projects in the lab and see if we can start our collaboration. I looked at the project he is working on, and although his previous research is not very similar to mine, I saw a part in his project that aligns very well with mine.
I spent a lot of time on the thesis this week, and the final result is very satisfying. This is the most meaningful thing that happened this week.
The first week also marked the start of my internship at ProSieben. After getting in touch with the company, I increasingly feel that the content of this internship is quite good. The people in the company are not only nice, but also have very detailed on-boarding and communication. They only require us to do creative work and hope that we don't do repetitive and basic things, which happens to be what I am most looking forward to doing. So in this week's work, I will consider proposing to them to increase the hours of the internship to 20 hours, so that I can have more time to do research in this area (of course, it's also nice to earn more money XD).
Overall, except for some funny time arrangements on Sunday, last week not only completed most of the content according to my plan but also gave me unexpected gains in exploration.
This week (Week 17), I hope to finalize the collaboration for my thesis, with a meeting scheduled for Thursday. At the same time, officially starting the research work is also one of the most important and anticipated parts for me this week.
Other Progress from Last Week#
- Added the "repeat" function to Lumeny, allowing me to integrate my review plan into the calendar.
- The relationship with my partner has become more harmonious, although the process was tortuous, our efforts have put an end to the vicious cycle during this period.
- The Hidden Brain Memory Episode helped me review the core learning techniques, and I also used this technique in my studies this week. It has benefited me a lot, and I will review this skill again this week and write it into a blog post.
Goals for Week 17#
- Start reading and thinking about Xclip, VOLm papers, and how to integrate video modality into VOLm or BEiT.
- Communicate with Eugenio about the projects in the lab and decide whether to accept. Inquire about the possibility of a Ph.D. and student work during the thesis period.
- Complete the article on Memory, review the process of memory formation, and the most suitable learning methods.
- Not enough time for it, but review the podcast once.
- The summary of next week should also be written and appear on my xlog.
